The Birthplace of President Harry S. Truman

Independence, Missouri is located on the south bank of the Missouri River, near the western edge of the state and about 10 miles east of Kansas City. Independence is the fourth largest city in the state and currently has about 115,000 population. It was the first county seat of Jackson County which later changed to Kansas City.

The major attraction for Independence Missouri is the home of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States of America. His library, his home, and his boyhood home are all in the area.

Independence is known as the "Queen City of the Trails" because the trail left from the Independence Town Square departing point for the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails. Countless of covered wagons left Independence for the lure of the west. Many did not complete the trip.

The city also played a major role in the early history of the Latter-day Saint movement. It is home to the denominational headquarters of several Latter-day Saint groups, and the Community of Christ Temple that is located there. The Midwest Genealogy Center, billed as one of the nation's largest libraries for people tracing their ancestry can be found in Independence. The Mormon Visitor Center is located at  937 W. Walnut in Independence.
